Aspergers Syndrome HFA Social Group

AS children are often left out socially and Val Schlanker, one of our parents, would like to co-ordinate a group for Asperger and high functioning children aged 9 - 13 to meet up for social activities eg. bowling, etc.

Email Befriending

 

Many individuals with ASDs are skilled with IT, and prefer to communicate through the written word rather than face-to-face conversation.
Email befriending accommodates this, and is available via the NAS, aiming to reduce social isolation, broaden the range of social experiences open to individuals, and to build supportive relationships.

Travel Assistance Scheme

Travel Assistance Scheme

This service is available to all disabled people in London to give them the confidence to use public transport.
It offers Travel Mentors to provide advice and a maximum of ten accompanied journeys.
As Travel mentors are not allowed to act as support workers they will not push wheelchairs or carry shopping.

Kidscape Bullying Workshops

Bullying Workshops

Kidscape offer workshops for children who are being bullied at school.
Most of the workshops are held in London and they are free. Parents can book their child on a course by contacting Kidscape.

Autiplan software

Autiplan is is web-based calendar software designed with ASD needs in mind. It features a wide choice of pictorial images to display and print out in a daily schedule.
It is only requires a web browser to access it after registering, and the basic version is free for private use by families.

Disability Student Allowance

Disability Student Allowance not to be confused with Disability Living Allowance


DSAs are available to full and part time students of all ages to help pay for anything that would aid studying, such as equipment and transport.
A diagnostic assessment is mandatory to prove eligibility.
Students are encouraged to make applications early to avoid delays when starting courses.

Gatwick and Special Needs

Gatwick has opened a new dedicated channel through passport control for children and adults with special needs and disabilities- particularly if they have any special equipment like wheelchairs. To speed up the process, they now have better technology to scan special equipment/ metal framing. But you should also tell your airline when booking travel.

runs from 10.30am ti 3.30pm Monday to Friday. It offers confidential impartial information and support to parents and other family members, individuals and voluntary and statutory organisation. They have a wide ranging database of information and fact sheets that we can send out to you on request. Some of the queries coming through the helpline this quarter have highlighted the ongoing difficulties carers face.
